Mézharmat

A mézharmat is a Hungarian dessert made from a sweet, honey-flavored dough that is typically filled with nuts and spices. Here’s a basic recipe to make mézharmat:

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the Filling:

  • 1 cup ground walnuts or almonds
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons honey

For the Glaze:

  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough:

    1. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
    2. Add the honey and egg, and mix well.
    3. In another bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and salt.
    4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
  2. Prepare the Filling:

    1. In a small bowl, mix together the ground nuts, sugar, and cinnamon.
    2. Stir in the honey until the mixture is well combined.
  3. Assemble the Mézharmat:

    1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    2. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/8-inch thickness.
    3. Cut the dough into squares or circles, depending on your preference.
    4. Place a small amount of the nut mixture in the center of each dough piece.
    5. Fold the dough over the filling to form a pocket, or fold the edges to create a sealed package.
    6. Place the filled dough pieces onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  4. Bake:

    1. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
    2. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly.
  5. Prepare the Glaze:

    1. While the mézharmat are cooling, heat the honey and water in a small saucepan over low heat until it becomes slightly runny.
    2. Brush the warm glaze over the mézharmat.
  6. Serve:

    1. Let the mézharmat cool completely before serving. Enjoy with a cup of tea or coffee!

Feel free to adjust the spices or nuts according to your taste. Enjoy making and eating your mézharmat!
